How to give your October wedding a seasonal twist without turning it into a costume party

Halloween weddings don’t have to mean pumpkins, skeletons and spooky props — unless you want them to, of course! If you’re tying the knot at the end of October and love the moodiness of the season but still want your day to feel stylish, romantic and elegant, we’re here for it.

There are so many ways to nod to Halloween without going full fancy dress. Think timeless glamour with a dark twist, or warm autumnal textures that feel seasonal without being themed. Here are some of our favourite ways to embrace October — the elegant way.

1. Go bold with florals

Skip the typical orange and instead go for rich, romantic tones like deep burgundy, plum, black dahlia, burnt amber, and dark greenery. Add dried textures, trailing ribbons or even a few berries or feathers to bring that slightly wild, dramatic edge. Floral arches, tall centrepieces, or flower runners can be styled with flickering candles to create a gorgeously gothic but still refined aesthetic.

2. Mood lighting is everything

At Tyn Dwr Hall, we’re lucky to have so many spaces that suit candlelight and lower lighting — from firepits and festoon lights outdoors to the warmth of our Ballroom and Drawing Room indoors. Add lanterns, votives, and statement chandeliers or uplighting to bring out that golden, romantic glow. If you want to lean in further, think moody colour washes or even projections for the evening.

3. Black tie with a velvet twist

A Halloween wedding is the perfect excuse to add a bit of opulence. Black tie works beautifully here — especially when paired with seasonal textures like velvet jackets, dark lace gowns, dramatic capes, or embroidered accessories. Think rich, luxurious, and just a touch theatrical — but always classy.

Bonus points for a bold lip, smoky eye or crystal hairpiece — they look incredible in candlelight.

4. Ditch the novelty, keep the charm

You don’t need spooky lanterns on every table to acknowledge the date. Instead, how about:

  • A black wedding cake with gold leaf or berry accents

  • A deep plum or spiced fig signature cocktail

  • Vintage-style glassware or black and gold place settings

  • Subtle pumpkin décor using real gourds or white and green varieties

These small touches nod to Halloween without being loud or obvious — and they photograph beautifully.

5. Evening extras with personality

This is where you can have a little fun. Tarot card readings, a moody photo booth with velvet backdrops, espresso martinis by the fire, or a playlist with a few cheeky seasonal tracks thrown in after dark. The key is to build atmosphere without losing the elegance.

Stylish. Seasonal. Still totally ‘you’.

A Halloween date doesn’t mean you need to compromise on sophistication. If anything, it’s the perfect excuse to get creative and go a little bolder with your wedding styling — in a way that still feels timeless and true to you.
