A calm guide for newly engaged couples
Getting engaged is magical. Telling your people, admiring the ring, letting it all sink in.
And then, almost quietly, the questions arrive.
Where do we start?
What actually matters?
How far ahead should we be booking things?
If you’ve recently got engaged, January often becomes the moment where excitement meets reality — and that’s completely normal. Planning a wedding doesn’t need to feel rushed or stressful. With a little structure (and a lot of breathing space), the next 12 months can feel exciting, considered and genuinely enjoyable.
Here’s a gentle timeline to help you navigate your first year of planning — and make decisions you’ll feel good about.
Before spreadsheets and supplier lists, take a moment to talk about what you actually want.
Ask each other:
What do we want this day to feel like?
Are we imagining something relaxed or more traditional?
What matters most to us — time together, food, atmosphere, location?
This is the moment to think about venue, season and guest experience. Booking your venue early gives shape to everything else and allows the rest of the planning to flow more naturally.
Try not to get caught up in trends at this stage. The strongest decisions come from clarity, not comparison.
Once your date and venue are confirmed, you can start booking the people who help bring the day to life.
This usually includes:
Photographer and/or videographer
Band or DJ
Celebrant or registrar
Florist (even if details come later)
These suppliers often book far in advance, so this stage is about securing availability, not finalising every detail. Trust that creativity can evolve — you’re simply building a strong foundation.
This is where ideas begin to take form.
You might start thinking about:
Colour palettes and textures
Attire inspiration
Florals and styling ideas
How spaces will be used throughout the day
Try to keep this stage playful rather than fixed. Save ideas that resonate, but don’t feel pressure to lock everything in. Some of the best decisions happen once you’ve lived with ideas for a while.
This is often when planning feels more “real” — and that’s a good thing.
You may be:
Sending save the dates or invitations
Finalising your guest list
Thinking about accommodation and logistics
Beginning menu conversations
This stage benefits from clarity and honesty. Knowing your numbers and priorities makes decision-making simpler and helps avoid unnecessary stress later on.
At this point, most of the big decisions are already made.
Now it’s about:
Finalising timings
Confirming menu choices
Checking in with suppliers
Thinking about the flow of the day
If doubt creeps in, that’s normal. Try not to overhaul things at this stage — refinement brings calm, whereas rethinking everything tends to add pressure.
The final weeks are about trust.
Trusting your choices.
Trusting the people you’ve booked.
Trusting that the day doesn’t need to be perfect to be wonderful.
Shift your focus from planning to presence. The most beautiful weddings aren’t the most tightly controlled — they’re the ones where couples feel supported enough to simply enjoy being there.
There is no single “right” way to plan a wedding. Timelines are guides, not rules — and the best plans are the ones that leave room for feeling, flexibility and joy.
If you’re newly engaged and beginning to explore venues, we’d always encourage you to visit the places you’re considering in person. How a space feels when you arrive, how you’re welcomed, and whether you can imagine yourself truly being there on your wedding day matters far more than a list of inclusions.
At Tyn Dwr Hall, visits are unhurried and personal. They’re a chance to walk the rooms, take in the views, ask the questions that matter to you, and see whether the Hall feels like the right fit for your celebration.
If you’re at the start of your planning journey, we’d love to welcome you and help you explore what your next twelve months could look like — calmly, thoughtfully, and at your own pace.
